The Kazakhstan Boxing Federation has successfully joined the World Boxing (WB) international sports organization, adding a 55th nation to the growing alliance.
This announcement came during World Boxing’s second annual Congress held in Pueblo, Colorado, following last week’s U19 World Boxing Championships.
The Congress was an important event for global boxing leaders, bringing together representatives from around the world to discuss significant updates to the WB charter, which have recently received the approval of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Key changes were made to the competition regulations, including the introduction of new weight categories and adjustments in how judges determine winners.
Kazakhstan’s entry into World Boxing marks a significant step for the country’s boxing federation, which has long been a powerhouse in the sport. Gennady Golovkin, former world champion and president of the Kazakh Olympic Committee, addressed the Congress attendees, expressing gratitude to US Boxing for hosting both the U19 Championships and the Congress. Golovkin also emphasized the achievements of the Kazakh Olympic Committee, particularly in establishing relationships with other National Olympic Committees and sports organizations, paving the way for Kazakhstan’s full membership in World Boxing.
During the Congress, Kazakhstan presented a proposal to host the 2027 World Qualifying Championships for the Los Angeles Olympic Games. This event would serve as a qualifying tournament, a vital step for athletes aiming to compete on the world’s largest sporting stage. The decision regarding Kazakhstan’s bid is expected soon.
World Boxing, established in April 2023, was founded as an alternative to the International Boxing Association (IBA), which lost its recognition from the IOC. As the organization responsible for Olympic qualification in boxing, World Boxing holds significant sway, as only national federations under WB can participate in Olympic boxing competitions.
